Security forces in Balochistan stopped an attempted drone attack on a security checkpost in Kharan district on Friday, shooting down five unmanned aircraft before they reached their target, according to security sources cited by Pakistani media. The incident took place in the Albat area of Kharan, where the drones were aimed at the installation at low altitude. No casualties and no damage to property were reported.

The account, carried by The News and Abb Takk News on 30 October, describes a prompt response by personnel at the post after the threat was detected. All five aircraft were destroyed in the air, the sources said. Officials have not yet released further technical detail about the drones, including what payload, if any, they were carrying, and that detail should not be assumed from the number of aircraft alone.

What security sources say happened

According to the reports, the attackers tried to strike the checkpost using low-flying drones, a method that has become a growing concern for security installations in the province. Security sources linked the attempt to Fitna al-Hindustan, a label Pakistan uses for groups it describes as Indian proxies. That attribution comes from the security sources quoted in the reports; it is not an independently verified claim by the outlets themselves, and readers should note the distinction.

The incident follows a similar interception last month, when security sources said eight drones that entered Pakistani airspace from Afghanistan were shot down. In that case, too, the air defence system deployed along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border was said to have detected the aircraft in time.

Why drone attacks worry Balochistan

Balochistan has faced a sustained militant campaign, and September figures cited in recent coverage underline the scale of the challenge in the province. Cheap, commercially available drones lower the barrier for attacks on fixed posts, because they can approach from the air without a ground assault. That changes the defensive task: posts must watch the sky as well as the road, and detection time becomes decisive.

The Kharan interception, if confirmed in fuller official detail, would show that detection worked in this instance. The wider question — how consistently small, low-flying aircraft can be spotted and stopped before they reach a target — remains open, and it is likely to shape counter-terrorism planning in the province in the months ahead.
