Palestine Action Ban Challenged in Supreme Court

Britain's highest court has heard a challenge to the government's ban on Palestine Action, as police arrested 25 supporters demonstrating outside the court.

The two-day hearing, which ran on Wednesday and Thursday, was brought by the group's co-founder, Huda Ammori, who is seeking to overturn its designation as a proscribed terrorist organisation.

She argues the ban infringed her rights to freedom of expression and assembly under the European Convention on Human Rights. The case was heard by five justices, and a decision is expected at a later date.

25 arrested outside the court

Police officers were seen carrying several demonstrators away into nearby vans on Wednesday, many holding placards reading "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action".

The Metropolitan Police said 25 people were arrested outside the Supreme Court "on suspicion of expressing support for a proscribed organisation", adding that officers "will continue to arrest those who break the law".

A ban that has led to thousands of arrests

Palestine Action was proscribed in July 2025 after activists broke into RAF Brize Norton and damaged two military aircraft. It was the first direct action group to be banned under the Terrorism Act.

The Court of Appeal ruled in June 2026 that the ban was lawful, overturning an earlier High Court ruling. But the Supreme Court appeal means the final word has yet to be given, and trials of those charged are on hold until the courts decide.

More than 3,000 people have been arrested for supporting the group since the ban, the court heard. On Saturday 31 October, police arrested 325 people outside the US embassy in London, 320 of them for expressing support for a proscribed organisation.
