Stacey Plaskett has been elected governor of the United States Virgin Islands, becoming the first woman to lead the territory in the 56 years since residents began electing their own governors. She is also the first Black woman elected governor of a United States jurisdiction.

Plaskett, the territory's delegate to Congress since 2015, won the 3 November election with 62.8 percent of the vote, 11,865 ballots in a five-ticket race against four independent tickets, according to Social Register Magazine. Her running mate, Senate President Milton Potter, becomes lieutenant governor. She succeeds Governor Albert Bryan Jr., who was barred from seeking a third term. The results remain unofficial pending certification by the territory's election system.

Her victory came on the same night Keisha Lance Bottoms won in Georgia to become the first Black woman elected governor of a US state, a double first that drew congratulations across the Caribbean. British Virgin Islands Premier Natalio Wheatley congratulated Plaskett and said he looked forward to strengthening ties between the neighbouring territories.

Plaskett takes office on 4 January 2027, and she has already set out her first priority. She said one of her first acts will be to declare a state of emergency at the troubled Water and Power Authority in January, in order to seek federal help from the US Department of Energy, President Trump and Congress to tackle the territory's long-running power crisis.
