Punjab has opened a new tourism resort at Taunsa Barrage in Kot Addu, giving visitors a chance to observe the rare Indus blind dolphin in its natural habitat.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced the opening of the Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) Blind Dolphin Resort in a social media post on 6 November. The resort has been developed across 120 kanals of land on the banks of the River Indus, and will be run by the TDCP.

The chief minister said the eco-friendly resort had been developed keeping international tourism standards in view. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe the rare Indus blind dolphins at close range in their natural environment along the riverbank.

The Indus blind dolphin is one of the world's rarest freshwater dolphins and is found only in the Indus River system in Pakistan. Taunsa Barrage, on the Indus in Kot Addu district, is one of the stretches of the river where the species can still be seen.

The resort is the latest addition to Punjab's tourism push around the province's river and heritage sites, and is aimed at drawing visitors to Kot Addu, a district in southern Punjab that sits on the Indus.

The announcement was made on the chief minister's official account, where she wrote that she was delighted to launch the resort. No entry fee or booking details were given in the announcement, and it was not stated when the resort would begin taking visitors.
