Scottie Barnes scored a game-high 28 points as the Toronto Raptors routed the Orlando Magic 129-99 on Wednesday at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. RJ Barrett added 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists, as Toronto improved to 3-1 and Orlando fell to 1-3.

Injuries on both sides, depth on one

Barnes bounced back from a scoreless performance in Sunday's road loss to Minnesota, when he missed all 12 of his field-goal attempts. Against Orlando, he was perfect from the field in a 16-point third quarter, including eight consecutive Toronto points, and his up-and-under three-point play gave the Raptors a 98-72 lead with 2:26 left in the period. The quarter scores tell the story of control: 32-25, 37-28, 34-23 and 26-23.

Toronto played its first game without Kawhi Leonard, who will miss at least a week with swelling in his left knee and was not on the bench. Ja'Kobe Walter started in his place and scored 14 points, while backup point guard Jamal Shead provided 13 points and seven assists. Immanuel Quickley added 16.

Orlando was also short-handed, without leading scorer Paolo Banchero (sprained right ankle) and Jalen Suggs (right knee). Reserve forward Tristan da Silva led the Magic with 20 points off the bench, Franz Wagner had 15 points, five assists and four rebounds, but Wagner was held to four points in the second half and committed seven turnovers. Toronto forced eight first-quarter turnovers and turned early pressure into a 25-point swing, from nine points down to a 16-point half-time lead. The two teams meet again at the same arena on Friday, in an NBA Cup game.
