Reform UK vetting crisis deepens after councillor charges

Reform UK is facing renewed scrutiny over how it vets candidates after a series of court cases involving party councillors and campaign staff, with fresh developments due in court in the coming days.

The most serious case concerns George Madgwick, Reform UK's leader on Hampshire County Council, who has been charged with 35 offences including 12 counts of rape, following an investigation by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed the charges, which relate to four complainants and alleged offences between 2008 and 2021 in Portsmouth and Wales. Mr Madgwick, 37, maintains his innocence and is due to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on 25 November. Reform UK has suspended him with immediate effect.

Party leader Nigel Farage has said he was unaware of the allegations against Mr Madgwick until they were raised with him, even though the councillor was arrested in January over multiple alleged sexual offences and remained in post for nearly ten months afterwards.

Further attention is expected on Monday, when suspended Sunderland city councillor Glenn Gibbins appears in court charged with making grossly offensive social media posts about Nigerians. Mr Gibbins denies the charge.

The cases have revived questions about Reform's vetting system, which has changed hands several times since the 2024 general election and now sits with deputy chair Paul Nuttall. An ITV undercover documentary recently showed party members making offensive remarks, and a member of Mr Farage's local election team was later jailed for a rape charge he faced at the time. The party has said it aims for a common-sense system and does not automatically bar candidates for intemperate social media posts. Proceedings against Mr Madgwick are now active, and he has the right to a fair trial. Source: Tru Express
