South Sudan Warns of Fake Voter Registration Link

South Sudan's National Elections Commission has warned citizens that a voter registration link circulating online is fake, telling people not to submit their details through it.

Commissioner Josephine Achiro Fortelo told Eye Radio on 6 November that the commission has not created a website or app for online registration. She said eligible voters will have to register in person at designated centres once the official exercise opens, and that no opening date has yet been announced.

The warning follows reports of a form being shared online as though it belonged to the election authority. The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, a South Sudanese civil society group, said it had checked the link with commission leaders and confirmed that it was not official.

The commission had already set the record straight in a written statement on 2 September, saying voter registration would be conducted manually, in person and on paper across the whole country. It said no voter had been registered anywhere in South Sudan at that point, that no electoral register existed, and that figures for registered voters circulating on social media had not been produced by the commission.

The warning comes as South Sudan prepares for general elections planned for 22 December 2026, the country's first since independence in 2011. Preparations have been running behind schedule: the commission has been delivering voter registration materials to states only in recent days, and civil society monitors say the distribution has not kept to the legally required timetable.

The commission's chairperson has also urged journalists to use local languages in voter education and to verify election information with the commission before publishing, warning against unverified notices and results spreading on social media.
