Storm Boelo kills two and leaves 161,400 homes without power

Two men were killed by falling trees as Storm Boelo battered the UK on Sunday, 25 October, police said, while more than 160,000 properties were left without power. The storm was the second named storm to hit the country in as many days, following Storm Austen on Friday.
The two deaths
A 60-year-old man died on a minor road at Mid Kelton near Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway at about 10.30am, after being struck by a falling tree, Police Scotland said. He was pronounced dead at the scene and there were no suspicious circumstances. In London, a man in his 20s was killed at about 12.40pm when a tree fell on his car as he drove through Mill Hill in the north of the city, according to police and ambulance reports. Two people were also taken to hospital in London after scaffolding fell in high winds.
Power, travel and flooding
The Energy Networks Association said 161,400 properties were without power at 3pm on Sunday, while 677,300 customers had been reconnected since Storm Austen began. Gusts reached 84mph in Argyll and Bute, 82mph on Tiree and 83mph in Snowdonia, and an amber wind warning covered Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and the far north of England until 9pm. A Jet2 plane veered off the runway after landing in high winds at Birmingham airport but taxied to the stand and all passengers disembarked safely. In Largs, seawater flooded shops on the high street, and sections of the Tarr Steps clapper bridge on Exmoor were washed away after heavy rain.
