Netflix has ordered a new live-action Stranger Things prequel, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, the streamer announced on Friday to mark Stranger Things Day. The series is set in Marion, Nevada, in 1955, decades before the events of the original show, and is due to premiere in 2028.

The story will explore the earliest chapter of the saga, centred on Henry Creel, the boy who becomes the villain Vecna. It predates both the original series, which ended with its fifth season in 2025, and the stage play The First Shadow, set in 1959. A short teaser released with the announcement gives the date 19 April 1955 and the place Marion, Nevada, before cutting to the year 2028.

The series is co-created by Matt and Ross Duffer with Kate Trefry, a writer on the original show who also wrote The First Shadow. Trefry will serve as showrunner, while Joe Wright, the director of Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes and executive-produce alongside Shawn Levy. Production will take place in New Mexico.

No cast has been announced, and Netflix has released no further plot details. The original series ran for five seasons and became one of Netflix's most successful shows, and the new series marks the fourth title set in its universe. The announcement was reported by Variety and covered widely on 7 November, the day after the order was made public.
