Syria Denies Plans to Send Troops to Yemen

Syria has denied reports that it plans to send troops to Yemen, dismissing the claims as baseless, according to the country's state news agency SANA.

A Syrian diplomatic source told SANA on Saturday that Syria had no plans to deploy troops to Yemen, and that military cooperation with Saudi Arabia currently focused on training forces, building capabilities and exchanging military expertise. The source added that the cooperation could eventually develop into a mutual defence agreement or Syria joining the Mecca defence pact, depending on the shared interests of both countries.

The denial followed a report by Agence France-Presse, citing Yemeni officials, that thousands of Syrian soldiers would be deployed to Yemen and Saudi Arabia to help fight the Houthis. A source in Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council told AFP that Syria and Saudi Arabia had agreed to send about 3,000 troops in a first phase, while a Yemeni defence ministry source described an initial force of about 3,000 fighters, including officers and specialists, with more than 10,000 eventually. Three Yemeni military sources and a defence official told AFP that hundreds of Syrian soldiers were already stationed on both sides of the Saudi-Yemeni border.

Neither Damascus nor Riyadh has publicly confirmed a combat deployment. A senior Syrian diplomat told Reuters that any suggestion of military deployments at this stage was premature and that the agreement covered advisory support, training and exchange of expertise only.

Reuters reported on Friday, citing two Syrian military sources and a senior US official, that Syria had sent a limited number of military personnel to Saudi Arabia in recent weeks to provide military advice and training, as the kingdom faces attacks by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis.

Syria and Saudi Arabia signed a defence cooperation deal on Wednesday during a visit to Riyadh by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
