Taiwan Tracks Chinese Aircraft and Warships

Taiwan's defence ministry has reported intense Chinese military activity around the island, detecting 11 military aircraft, 10 warships and three official Chinese vessels in a 24-hour period.

The activity was recorded between 6 a.m. on Friday and 6 a.m. on Saturday 7 November, according to the ministry's daily bulletin. Nine of the aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan's air defence identification zone in the northern and southwestern sectors.

The ministry said Taiwan's armed forces monitored the situation and responded with its own aircraft, navy ships and coastal missile systems. It also published a map showing the routes taken by the Chinese aircraft as they approached the island from the northwest and southwest.

The latest figures add to a busy month for Chinese patrols around Taiwan. The ministry's running count for November reached 125 aircraft detections and 83 naval vessel detections in the first week of the month. Daily bulletins over the preceding days recorded varying levels of activity, including 49 aircraft on 4 November and 19 aircraft on 2 November, showing how the scale of the patrols shifts from day to day.

China has not publicly commented on the latest activity. Beijing regards Taiwan as part of its territory and has stepped up military patrols around the island in recent years, while Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claim and says it will defend the island.

The patrols come at a sensitive moment for the region, with leaders of China, the United States and Russia reported to be discussing a possible three-way meeting on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Shenzhen later this month.
