Iran's navy says an oil tanker caught fire after striking a sea mine east of the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday morning, while sailing through a restricted area.

In a statement on Saturday, the navy said the tanker was operating in a prohibited and unsafe zone despite repeated warnings, and had switched off its navigation systems. The vessel caught fire early in the morning after the mine strike and was left unable to move, according to the statement. The navy warned that this would be the fate of all vessels violating the restrictions and ignoring warnings.

The statement follows a series of similar claims by Iran's armed forces in recent days. On Thursday, the Guards and the army said in separate statements that five oil tankers and a tugboat had caught fire in the strait after striking mines.

Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported that a tanker had been struck by two unidentified projectiles about 50 nautical miles off the north coast of Qatar, without providing details on any damage or casualties.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is one of the world's most important energy passageways, carrying a substantial share of global seaborne oil supplies.
