Three people were taken to hospital after a light aircraft crashed while coming in to land at Beccles Aerodrome in Suffolk on Wednesday lunchtime. Emergency services were called to the airfield shortly before 12.10pm on 28 October after reports that the aircraft had come down during its landing approach. Police, ambulance crews and Suffolk Fire and Rescue all attended, and part of the airfield was cordoned off. Police said the three people who were hurt were not believed to have suffered serious injuries. They were taken to James Paget Hospital in Gorleston for treatment. Ambulance reports also indicate one further person was treated at the scene. The police cordon was lifted at around 1.40pm, although the airfield remained closed to small incoming aircraft while work continued.

Emergency response at the airfield

Beccles Aerodrome, near the Suffolk–Norfolk border, is a general-aviation airfield used by private pilots, flying schools and recreational flyers rather than commercial passenger services. A spokesperson for the aerodrome said the crew had left the airfield and added: “We hope that everyone involved is okay.” Ground ambulances, fire crews and an air ambulance attended. Local disruption was limited to the airfield itself.

Investigation to follow

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been informed, as is standard after an aircraft accident in the UK. Investigators will now look at what happened during the final stages of the flight and why the aircraft came down short of a normal landing. No cause has been confirmed, and no further details about the aircraft or those on board have been released. Updates are expected once investigators have examined the scene and spoken to witnesses.
