Tinubu Tells Fubara: You Will Not Regret Choosing Peace

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has assured Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara that he will not regret accepting intervention in the state's long-running political crisis, praising the governor for his maturity and respect for political elders.

Tinubu spoke on Saturday at the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign rally at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, where he also praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as a key partner in driving infrastructure development.

Addressing Fubara directly, the president thanked him for accepting the intervention of elders and for maintaining peace in the state. "When we intervened, you respected our position, you maintained peace, and you are a committed democrat. Fubara, you will not regret what you have done as long as all of us are alive," Tinubu said.

The president described the crisis as a misunderstanding within a political family and said Fubara had shown wisdom and understanding throughout the reconciliation process. He also thanked the governor for maintaining peace and stability during the dispute.

The political crisis between Fubara and his predecessor Wike erupted in October 2023, months after Fubara succeeded him as governor. It persisted despite repeated interventions until March 2025, when Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, suspending Fubara, his deputy and members of the state assembly. Emergency rule was lifted in September 2025.

In 2026 both camps moved towards reconciliation, with Fubara publicly recognising Wike as leader of the Rainbow Coalition, an alliance of APC and PDP members. At Saturday's rally, Fubara declared that the time of political warfare was over and pledged that Rivers would deliver at least three million votes for Tinubu in the January 2027 presidential election.
