Tommy Paul thrashes Darderi 6-1, 6-1 in Vienna

Tommy Paul has powered into the Vienna Open quarter-finals after thrashing Italy's Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1 in under an hour on Thursday.
The world No. 14 dominated from the first rallies at the ATP 500 event, giving Darderi no route back into a one-sided second-round match. Paul, the seventh seed, had earlier beaten Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-2 in the first round.
Dominant from the first rallies
The statistics underlined Paul's control. He fired 10 aces to Darderi's three and won 95 per cent of points on his first serve, while breaking serve five times. Darderi, ranked 23rd, held serve only twice in the match.
For Darderi, the defeat ends his hopes of finishing the season inside the world's top 20 at this event. His last chance to reach that mark will now come at the Paris Masters, where he has lost in the first round on both previous appearances.
What comes next
Paul advances to the quarter-finals in Vienna, where he will look to extend a strong late-season run on indoor hard courts. The American has now won his last two matches in the Austrian capital without dropping a set.
Darderi, meanwhile, heads to Paris needing a deep run to climb into the top 20 before the season ends. Sources: LaPresse and Tennis.com match data.
