Trump, Lula and Carney confirmed for Manila ASEAN summit

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will attend the ASEAN Summit in Manila later this month, joining United States President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, the Philippines confirmed on Friday.
Lula will attend as a guest of the summit chair, Dominic Imperial, the Philippine foreign department's spokesperson for ASEAN issues, told reporters. The Philippines will host the 49th ASEAN Summit and related meetings from November 15 to 18, at the close of its year as chair of the regional bloc.
Trump, Lula and Carney are among more than 20 leaders expected in Manila, and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is also expected to attend. Leaders of every ASEAN country apart from Myanmar have confirmed they will attend, with Myanmar set to be represented by a career diplomat.
One of the main expected outcomes is the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, which Philippine officials describe as the first agreement anywhere to set binding commitments for a regional digital economy. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Leo Herrera Lim said the pact was among the summit's headline results, alongside discussions on energy and food security, digital transformation, agriculture and the governance of artificial intelligence.
The summit will not, however, be the venue for an announcement on the Pax Silica economic security zone, the United States envoy to the Philippines clarified on Saturday. No agreement on the semiconductor and artificial intelligence initiative was planned for the summit, Ambassador Lee Lipton said. Read the full report from DNA News Agency.
