Two Killed in Chongwe Hit-and-Run as Driver Arrested

Two men have died after a truck struck their motorcycle and drove away on the Great East Road in Chongwe District, Zambia, police have confirmed.
The crash happened at about 19:08 on Saturday, 7 November 2026, at Nangwenya Bridge, according to Zambia Police Service spokesperson Chipo Kaitisha. A statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday said the two victims were taken to Chongwe District Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said an unidentified man was riding an unregistered Boxer motorcycle from east to west, carrying an unidentified male passenger, when the motorcycle was hit from behind by a Mitsubishi Fuso Fighter light truck. The truck, registration number BAE 7111, was travelling in the opposite direction.
According to Kaitisha, the motorcyclist sustained fatal head injuries, while his passenger suffered multiple fatal bodily injuries. The motorcycle was extensively damaged and has been taken to Chongwe Police Station, where it is awaiting re-examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency.
The truck driver allegedly failed to stop after the crash and fled the scene. Police traffic officers traced and arrested him in the early hours of Sunday, 8 November, at the Food Reserve Agency Depot in Chongwe District.
Police identified the suspect as Greyd Mweemba, aged 40, of Mwantalasha Village in Chongwe District. He is detained at Chongwe Police Station and is expected to be charged, Kaitisha said. The truck has been impounded and is parked at the police station.
The bodies of the two victims have been deposited at Chongwe District Hospital Mortuary, where they are awaiting identification and post-mortem examinations. Police have appealed to members of the public who may have information that could help identify the two men to report to the nearest police station.
Kaitisha also urged motorists to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations, and never to flee the scene of an accident, particularly where lives have been lost or people injured.
The Great East Road, which links Lusaka to eastern Zambia, has recorded a series of fatal crashes in recent months. In September, five people were killed and eight injured in two separate accidents along the road in Lusaka and Chongwe districts, including four passengers who died when a minibus overturned at Nangwenya, the same area where Saturday's crash took place.
Police said at the time that the minibus, a Toyota Quantum carrying ten passengers, had overturned several times after the driver allegedly lost control because of excessive speed. A second fatal crash the same night, at the entrance to the Manda Hill shopping mall in Lusaka, killed a 23-year-old student driver. Inquiries into both accidents were still open when police reported them.
