UK eVisa holders urged to check details before travelling

Travellers returning to the United Kingdom are being reminded to check that their online immigration record matches their current passport before they travel, after renewed attention to eVisa checks this week. An eVisa is a digital record of immigration permission, held in a UKVI account, rather than a physical document in a passport. If the passport details linked to that account are out of date, airlines and border checks may not match the traveller to their permission, causing delays.

How to check an eVisa

GOV.UK explains that an eVisa shows a person's identity and immigration status, including rights to work, rent or claim benefits, and that a share code can be generated to prove that status to an employer, landlord or carrier. The share code lasts for 90 days and can be reused until it expires. Anyone who has changed their name or nationality, or who cannot be recognised from their current photo, should update their UKVI account before generating a code.

Before you travel

The practical lesson is to check the record well before departure, not at the airport. Renewing a passport is a common reason for a mismatch, because the new document must be linked to the existing permission. Travellers should also make sure they can still sign in to their UKVI account, using the email address or phone number registered to it, and that the details shown belong to them.

This article is general information only and is not personal immigration advice; individual circumstances can change what applies, so readers should check the official GOV.UK eVisa page before acting and consider a regulated immigration adviser for their own case. The official page, at gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status, explains how to view an eVisa, update account details and report an error if the record shown is wrong. Rules change, so always confirm the position on the official page before acting.
