UK Student Visa Applications Hit Five-Year Low

Applications for UK sponsored study visas fell to their lowest September total in five years, according to Home Office figures released on 8 October 2026. Main applicants made 71,600 sponsored study applications in September 2026, down 10.3%, or 8,200, on September 2025.

August 2026, the busiest month of the intake, saw only 99,500 applications, down from 120,300 in August 2025 and 147,200 in August 2023. Across July to September 2026 there were 230,300 student applications, down 24.7% on the 305,800 recorded in the same months of 2022. For the year ending September 2026, main-applicant applications totalled 352,500, down 19%.

Applications, not enrolments

The figures count applications, not enrolments or grants, and they describe demand at the application stage rather than the number of students who arrived. They are distinct from the student maintenance-funds rise taking effect on 30 November 2026, which DailyByte has already covered: this story is about how many people applied, not what funds they must show.

September is traditionally the peak month for study applications ahead of the autumn term, which makes a five-year low in that month a notable marker for the sector. The monthly series covers main applicants for sponsored study; it does not count dependants, and it records applications made rather than visas granted or students enrolled.
