Storms Austen and Boelo leave 7,800 homes without power

Thousands of homes in Scotland remained without power on Tuesday 27 October 2026 as the country counted the cost of two storms in quick succession. Energy Networks Association figures reported on Tuesday morning said 838,700 properties had lost power across Storms Austen and Boelo, with 829,400 reconnected by 8am and 7,800 still waiting to be restored.
Two deaths at the weekend
Two men were killed by falling trees on Sunday 25 October: a man in his 20s in Finchley, north London, and Richard Baines, 60, in Dumfries and Galloway. Storm Boelo brought gusts of 84mph and a third of a month's rain to some parts of Scotland, following Storm Austen only hours earlier.
Schools shut and travel disrupted
Schools were closed again on Tuesday, including all schools and nurseries in the Western Isles, with further closures in Aberdeenshire, Highland, Moray and Perth and Kinross. ScotRail imposed speed restrictions on parts of its network because of heavy rainfall, with longer journey times expected. At 9.30am on Tuesday, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency had 13 flood alerts and 39 flood warnings in place; the Environment Agency in England had five flood warnings and 41 alerts, and Natural Resources Wales had two warnings and eight alerts.
More wind before a calmer Wednesday
A Met Office yellow wind warning covered most of Scotland until 9pm on Tuesday, with gusts over 70mph possible in the far north and north-west. The Met Office said conditions would begin to settle from Wednesday as high pressure builds.
