US warns Americans of Houthi attack threat in region

The United States has warned Americans across the Middle East to exercise heightened vigilance because of an increased threat of armed attacks by Iranian-supported Houthis and Iranian efforts to target US government officials in the region.
The same security alert was issued by seven US diplomatic posts. The US missions in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Jordan issued it dated 7 November local time, while the missions in Iraq, Kuwait and Jerusalem issued it dated 6 and 7 November, according to EditUSA.
The alert, published by the US Mission in Saudi Arabia, warns Americans to be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions. It says Houthi forces have attacked civilian airports and other critical infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, causing civilian casualties and severe travel disruption, and warns that hostilities could escalate rapidly.
Land border crossings in Saudi Arabia, including the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain, remain operational, the alert says, as do highways around Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran. It suggests rail, coach and private-car travel as alternatives if flights are disrupted, and urges Americans to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program so embassies can reach them in an emergency.
The alert also notes that, effective 23 October 2026, the State Department ordered non-emergency US government employees and their family members to leave Saudi Arabia because of safety risks. US government employees working in Saudi Arabia require special authorisation to use any airport in the country and are not allowed to travel within 20 miles of the Yemen border.
The warning says Iran and groups supportive of Iran may also target other US interests overseas, including businesses and institutions associated with the United States and Americans.
