Health work under way in Baqen County

Relief and resettlement work is continuing in China's Xizang Autonomous Region after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Baqen County in Nagqu City at 10:33 p.m. on Thursday 22 October. According to local authorities, 16 people have died and 76 others have been injured. More than 12,000 residents were evacuated, and disease control teams have since carried out epidemic prevention work across the affected area, including infectious disease monitoring of more than 3,600 residents at 35 resettlement sites, disinfection of public areas and drinking water safety testing.

Hospitals, tents and supplies reach affected villages

Hospitals near the disaster zone dispatched medical workers in the immediate aftermath, and mobile medical stations have been set up at resettlement sites, offering checkups, medicine, disinfection and basic psychological counselling. One report described a doctor reaching an injured villager before dawn on Friday to treat an ankle abrasion, while a pregnant woman received basic health checks. The epicentre sits at an average altitude of nearly 4,800 metres, where late-October temperatures are already low, and stoves have been placed inside tents to keep displaced residents warm.

Power restored as aftershocks continue

Authorities said power supply had been fully restored and relief supplies covering 20 categories had arrived, including tents and prefabricated housing. The earthquake affected 13,673 people across two townships and 34 administrative villages, with 12,489 people relocated. By Saturday afternoon, 949 aftershocks had been recorded, including eight of magnitude 4.0 to 4.9, and a 5.7-magnitude aftershock was recorded on Sunday evening. As of Saturday, 36 injured people remained in hospital and the rest had been discharged after treatment, according to state broadcaster CCTV as reported by People's Daily.
