Anthropic Strikes $3.4bn Gas Generator Deal for AI

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of artificial intelligence models, has agreed a deal worth about $3.4 billion to secure gas-fired power generators for its data centres, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, 8 November 2026. The report was carried by Reuters via The Hindu BusinessLine.

According to the report, Anthropic bought commitments for 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty generators in late September from OnePWR Solutions, an equipment supplier based in San Antonio, Texas. The package also covers the engineering and construction work needed to install the generators. Anthropic did not acquire OnePWR itself, and none of the supplier's employees transferred to the AI company.

The generators were ordered from Caterpillar, the United States maker of engines and generator sets, about two years ago, but OnePWR needed financing to complete the purchase. Anthropic had initially planned to become a OnePWR customer, but instead chose to take over the existing Caterpillar order directly, securing access to equipment that was already ordered before prices rose sharply.

Report not yet confirmed by the companies

Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report, and that Anthropic and OnePWR did not respond to requests for comment. The report also does not say where the generators will be installed or which data centres they will serve, so those details remain unknown.

That caution matters. The $3.4 billion figure, the 1.7 gigawatt capacity and the late-September timing all come from a single report citing a person familiar with the matter, and neither party has confirmed them publicly. What is on the public record, however, is that Anthropic has been moving to lock in power for its data centres as it prepares for a stock market listing.

Power is the bottleneck for AI growth

Strong demand for Claude has prompted Anthropic to secure additional computing and power capacity. Reuters reported in September that the company expects to spend more than $500 billion over the next 10 years building AI infrastructure. Anthropic filed publicly for a Nasdaq listing on 26 October, and an amended filing on 2 November said that certain planned data centre facilities would rely on dedicated on-site natural gas-fired generation.

The reported generator deal fits that picture. Data centre operators are competing for turbines, generators, substations and other equipment, which the company's own listing documents describe as subject to extended delivery times, price increases and rationing. Buying up an existing order for heavy-duty generators, rather than joining the back of the queue for new ones, would give Anthropic faster access to power for its planned facilities.

Investors will now watch for confirmation from Anthropic or OnePWR, for any detail on where the generators will be installed, and for the timing of Anthropic's planned listing, which is expected as early as this month.
