Eurozone unemployment holds at 6.5% in September

Unemployment across the eurozone held steady at 6.5% in September, according to figures published by Eurostat, the European Union's statistics office, on 30 October. The rate was unchanged from August but higher than the 6.3% recorded in September 2025.
Eurostat estimated that 11.555 million people were unemployed across the 19-country currency bloc in September, 122,000 more than in August and 420,000 more than a year earlier. The wider European Union's unemployment rate also held steady, at 6.2%, with 13.773 million people out of work, up 105,000 on the month.
Youth unemployment continued to climb. The euro area rate for people under 25 rose to 15.4% in September, up from 15.1% in August, underlining the weaker hiring picture for younger workers even as the headline rate stayed flat.
Among the larger economies, France saw its jobless rate rise to 8.5% in September, up from 8.3% in August and 7.9% a year earlier, according to Eurostat's release. Germany's labour market also remained under pressure, with its unemployment rate at 6.4% in October on national figures.
Eurostat's estimates follow the International Labour Organisation definition, counting people without work who have actively sought a job in the past four weeks and are available to start within two weeks. The figures are subject to later revision. Eurostat is due to publish EU Labour Force Survey data for the third quarter on 11 December.
