China October Inflation Due Monday as CPI Seen Easing

China opens the week's run of global inflation data on Monday, when the National Bureau of Statistics publishes October's consumer and producer prices at 9:30am in Beijing, 1:30am GMT.

Consumer inflation is expected to ease to 0.8 percent year on year, from 0.9 percent in September, with prices flat on the month. The figures are expected to underline the split in China's price pressures: subdued consumer demand on one side and firmer industrial prices on the other. A reading in line with forecasts would keep consumer inflation below 1 percent for another month, a level that points to weak pricing power for businesses selling to households.

Producer prices are due at the same time, and forecasts for the factory-gate reading differ between outlets. One preview puts the annual producer-price change at a fall of 5.4 percent, from a 5.0 percent fall in September, pointing to deepening deflation at the factory gate, while another carries the same figures without the minus sign. This draft therefore carries no point figure for producer prices.

The inflation data start a busy week for Chinese statistics, with October trade figures due on Tuesday. The trade surplus is expected to narrow to about $126.50 billion, from $133.53 billion, according to the same preview. Investors will watch both releases for signs of whether domestic demand is steadying, and for what they imply for the yuan and commodity prices.
