Cole Palmer will miss Chelsea's Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool on Wednesday after his red card against Tottenham, but the midfielder will be available again for the Premier League visit to Manchester United the following week, because his ban is for one match only.

Palmer, 24, was sent off for the first time in his professional career after two yellow cards in nine second-half minutes of Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge. Referee Chris Kavanagh first booked him for a clash with Tottenham's Mateus Fernandes that sparked a melee, then showed a second yellow in the 80th minute after Palmer left his studs on former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. Suspensions from Premier League red cards carry over into domestic cup competitions, so the ban falls on the Anfield cup tie, the next domestic fixture.

Neville: he lost his head

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, said Palmer had only himself to blame: "He's spot on the referee, Cole Palmer has lost his head in the last 10 minutes. That one is no-brainer. That's just a silly challenge, he knows exactly what he's doing." Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso said from the touchline he had not seen the fouls, but admitted his side fell well short as Mike Penders' own goal and a late Mathys Tel strike sealed Tottenham's win.
