England Crowned World Deaf Rugby Sevens Champions in Tokyo

England's men were crowned World Deaf Rugby Sevens champions after a commanding 45-5 win over Australia in the final in Tokyo, completing a dominant campaign at the third edition of the tournament.
Captained by Westcliff's Matt Barrell, England had to come from behind in the final at Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, with Australia opening the scoring before the English side piled on 45 unanswered points to take the crown in style.
The road to the title went through the two-time defending champions. England swept aside South Africa 36-0 in the quarter-finals before overcoming Wales 19-12 in a fiercely contested semi-final, ending the Welsh side's grip on the trophy and setting up the meeting with Australia.
It was a successful tournament all round for the England squads, with the women's side also reaching their final and claiming silver after losing 31-14 to Australia, who avenged an earlier group-stage defeat to the English women.
The championship, held in Tokyo from 31 October to 3 November, was the first edition of the event staged in Asia, following tournaments in Australia in 2018 and Argentina in 2023, where Wales won both the men's and women's titles. England finished third in the men's competition last time out, so this year's triumph marks a clear step forward for a squad that went through the tournament unbeaten, as The Rugby Paper reported.
