FTSE 100 Falls 1% as Tech Selloff Hits London

London shares slid on Friday as a global selloff in technology stocks reached the UK, with the FTSE 100 closing 1% lower at 10,673.94.

The blue-chip index ended the session well off its earlier lows, helped by a recovery on Wall Street, after falling as much as 2.2% to 10,540.78 by mid-morning. At that point it was on course for its worst session since mid-March. The more domestically focused FTSE 250 fell 0.8% to 24,504.32.

The selloff followed sharp falls on Wall Street on Thursday, when the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq recorded their steepest one-day drops since April 2025. Investors have grown nervous about the outlook for artificial intelligence spending, and the jitters spilled over into European markets, with the pan-European STOXX 600 down 1%.

A stronger-than-expected US jobs report added to the pressure in London. The non-farm payrolls figures strengthened the case for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in December, lifting government bond yields and weighing on rate-sensitive shares.

There were some bright spots among the fallers. Coca-Cola HBC was the biggest riser in the FTSE 100, up 3.36%, while Rolls-Royce climbed 2.89%. At the other end of the index, London Stock Exchange Group fell 2.85% and National Grid dropped 2.80%.

The FTSE 100's fall rounded off a turbulent week for global markets, in which worries about technology valuations, the war in the Middle East and the path of interest rates have combined to unsettle investors. Markets were closed on Saturday, with trading resuming on Monday.
