Gardner blitz powers Sixers past Thunder in Sydney derby

Sydney Sixers captain Ashleigh Gardner smashed an 18-ball fifty as her side beat Sydney Thunder by nine runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in a rain-shortened Women's Big Bash League Sydney derby at North Sydney Oval on Sunday 8 November 2026. Gardner finished unbeaten on 64 from 25 balls as the Sixers made it four wins from four this season. Cricbuzz called it an all-round show from the Sixers skipper, who also took two wickets with the ball.

The match was reduced to 16 overs a side after rain interrupted play. Put in to bat, the Sixers struggled early on. Sophia Dunkley fell for a run-a-ball 15, and Melie Kerr found the going tough, crawling to 14 from 17 balls as the rain arrived after nine overs.

With the game shortened and only seven overs left, the Sixers made a bold tactical call. Kerr was retired out to bring the big-hitting Gardner to the crease, and the decision paid off immediately. Gardner cut loose from the start, striking five fours and five sixes in a destructive unbeaten knock.

Ellyse Perry provided the perfect support at the other end, finishing unbeaten on 59 and bringing up her own half-century with three boundaries in the final over. Together the pair lifted the Sixers to 162 for 2 from their 16 overs, a total that looked well beyond reach when the rain had first arrived.

Gardner's fifty came from just 18 deliveries, the second-fastest half-century in WBBL history, and it changed the entire shape of the match. What had been a stuttering innings became a commanding one in the space of a few overs.

Thunder's chase started badly. Openers Georgia Voll and Phoebe Litchfield fell early, and by midway through the fourth over the Thunder were already 34 for 3. Young fast bowler Caoimhe Bray, only 17, led the Sixers attack with 4 for 28, removing Litchfield, Voll, Nadine de Klerk and the dangerous Laura Harris.

Harris briefly gave the Thunder hope with a rapid 35 from 10 balls, including four sixes and a switch-hit maximum into her own team's dugout. But Bray drew a false shot from her to end the threat, and apart from de Klerk's 30 there was little else of substance in the Thunder innings.

Bray capped a remarkable day in the field with a catch already being described as the catch of the season. She kept the ball in play on the boundary line to complete the dismissal of Jemma Barsby for a golden duck, with Sarah Coyte officially credited with the catch. Perry also made her mark in the field, throwing down the stumps from mid-on for a crucial run out.

The Thunder were eventually bowled out for 158 in 15.3 overs, nine runs short of their revised DLS target of 168. The defeat was their second of the campaign and leaves them on two wins from four matches.

The Sixers, meanwhile, remain unbeaten with a 4-0 start to the season. They face the Renegades next in Melbourne on Thursday, while the Thunder travel to play the Perth Scorchers on Wednesday.
