India Edge New Zealand by 4 Runs in Rain-Hit 2nd ODI

India beat New Zealand by four runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in a rain-hit second one-day international at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on Saturday 7 November 2026, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series in the most dramatic circumstances.
New Zealand were bowled out for 134 in 41 overs, and India had reached 113 for 7 in 26 overs when heavy rain stopped play for good. With the DLS par score at 109, India were four runs ahead when the umpires abandoned the match at the cut-off time.
Brar bowls New Zealand out for 134
India won the toss and chose to bowl on a difficult, moisture-laden surface, and the decision was vindicated almost immediately. Auqib Nabi removed the openers and Anshul Kamboj dismissed Henry Nicholls to reduce New Zealand to 23 for 3, before Gurnoor Brar produced a fiery spell to finish with career-best figures of four wickets for 30 runs.
Brar bounced out Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips in the same over, dismissed Mitchell Santner, and added one more to complete his haul. Daryl Mitchell was the only batter to reach a half-century, making 55 from 104 balls, and he too was dropped on 21 on a pitch he described as like "batting on a trampoline at times". The tail offered no fight, and New Zealand were dismissed for 134.
India stumble in the chase
Chasing a modest target of 135 in a match reduced to 47 overs a side, India's star-studded batting line-up collapsed in the gloom. Jacob Duffy removed captain Shubman Gill for a golden duck and later got Virat Kohli for seven, while Kyle Jamieson beat Rohit Sharma repeatedly before drawing the edge that ended his innings for 23. Jamieson finished with three wickets for 35 runs.
Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul steadied the innings with a 39-run stand for the fifth wicket, Iyer counterattacking for 30 before Jamieson's sharp, in-seaming bouncer found the edge. Rahul kept India in the chase, unbeaten on 26 from 38 balls, but Naman Dhir and Anshul Kamboj fell at awkward moments, leaving the tail exposed at 113 for 7.
Rain decides it by four runs
With 22 runs needed from 21 overs and just three wickets in hand, rain arrived and refused to relent. The DLS par score after 26 overs was 109, and with India four runs ahead of it, the umpires called the match off at the cut-off time, handing the visitors a four-run win by the barest of margins.
"It wasn't easy batting," winning captain Gill said. "Getting them out at 134, I thought it'll be an easy target, but it wasn't. Happy we got there in the end." Losing captain Santner admitted his side were below par with the bat, saying his team could have scraped to 160 or 180, but praised a bowling effort that gave India a genuine scare. Brar was named player of the match.
The defeat was New Zealand's 11th against India in the calendar year across formats, the most they have ever lost to one opponent in a year, and the first time they have lost successive one-day internationals at home since January 2019, also against India. The series moves to Hamilton for the third ODI on Tuesday 10 November.
