Jordanian officer killed in Amman stabbing near Sri Lankan embassy

By The Daily Byte ·05 Nov 2026 ·2 min read
Amman, Jordan, at dusk. This is a file photograph of the city, not the scene of the attack.

A Jordanian security officer was killed and another was wounded in a stabbing attack in Amman on Thursday, Jordan's Public Security Directorate said, adding that the suspect had been arrested. The attack took place near the Sri Lankan embassy on Medina Street, one of the capital's main roads.

The officer who died was identified as Corporal Jawad Ali Khalaf al-Salaita, a member of the diplomatic security unit, who was on duty at a guard post outside the embassy. The attack happened at about 12.20pm. The second officer, the commanding officer of the responding patrol, suffered facial injuries and was taken to hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

PSD calls it a planned terrorist attack

Jordan's Public Security Directorate said preliminary investigations indicated the attacker had intended and planned to carry out a "terrorist attack" against public security personnel. State-run Al-Mamlaka TV reported that the attacker tried to seize the slain officer's weapon before another officer intervened.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman confirmed the attack happened in its vicinity and said all embassy staff and members of the Sri Lankan community in Jordan were safe. The stabbing comes weeks after gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a church in southern Jordan, killing nine people and wounding dozens. It was not immediately clear whether the two attacks were related.
