North Korea tests new air-defence missile in cruise missile drill

North Korea test-fired a newly designed air-defence missile system and staged a cruise missile strike drill on Wednesday, state media KCNA reported on Thursday 5 November. The launches were detected by South Korea's military from the Sondok area on the east coast.

KCNA said the Missile Administration's test confirmed the technical specifications and reliability of the new air-defence missile's materials and multiple guidance modes. A sub-unit of the long-range strategic cruise missile unit in the east also struck a virtual airport target in the drill, according to the report.

Fourth launch — in a month or a week?

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles flew less than 300 kilometres towards the sea, and that the authorities were still analysing the specific type. Reuters described the event as the fourth North Korean weapons launch in a month, while Yonhap called it the fourth in a week; the two counts differ and neither is presented here as settled.

Images released by Pyongyang appeared to show the cruise missile carrying a cluster warhead, according to Shin Jong-woo of the Korea Defense and Security Forum. Shin also said the new air-defence missile, first unveiled in November 2025, appears to have a guidance section resembling Russia's S-400 surface-to-air missile. That resemblance is an analyst's assessment, not a confirmed fact.
