Man City edge Brighton 4-3 on penalties in cup

Manchester City survived a scare against Brighton to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, winning 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on 28 October. Brighton led twice through Malick Yalcouyé in the 30th minute and Georginio Rutter shortly after half-time, in the 47th minute. Mateo Kovacic levelled once for City in the 40th minute, and Vitor Reis made it 2-2 in the 72nd minute.
Rulli holds his nerve
Neither side found a winner in the closing stages, although Brighton substitute Mats Wieffer struck the post late on. In the shootout, City goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli saved penalties from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk, the final two Brighton kicks. Jason Steele had earlier saved from Kovacic, but Rulli's two stops proved decisive as City edged the shootout 4-3.
Bradford await the holders
City will host Bradford City in the quarter-finals, keeping their defence of the trophy alive after a difficult fourth-round test. Brighton, who had knocked Manchester United out in the previous round, left Manchester disappointed after twice holding the lead. The two sides meet again at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday, giving Brighton an immediate chance to respond.
