Medvedev saves match point to reach Vienna last eight

Daniil Medvedev produced a remarkable escape to beat Britain's Cameron Norrie 4-6 6-3 7-6(1) at the Vienna Open on Thursday and reach the 100th tour-level quarter-final of his career. The former world No. 1 extended his winning streak to six matches after successfully defending his title at last week's Almaty Open, but for long spells against Norrie it looked as though that run would end, as the British left-hander took the opening set and then served for the match in the decider.
Frustration, then a famous fightback
Medvedev's frustrations boiled over early in the final set, when he repeatedly bent down and struck the court after falling 0-2 behind, apparently unhappy with how slow the surface was playing. Norrie, ranked No. 41 in the world, moved ahead 5-3 and earned a match point on his own serve, only for Medvedev to save it, break back and force a tiebreak that he dominated 7-1. It was the second time in the decider that the third seed had recovered from a break down, and the win also lifted him back to fifth place in the Race to Turin, keeping alive his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals.
A milestone built on consistency
Reaching 100 tour-level quarter-finals is a mark of Medvedev's consistency over the past eight seasons, during which he has won 25 titles including the 2021 US Open, with ten of those trophies coming indoors. Vienna holds good memories for him: he won the title here in 2022, beating Denis Shapovalov in the final. Next up is French qualifier Adrian Mannarino, who stunned eighth seed Jakub Mensik in the round of 16, and Medvedev will know that every ranking point counts as the race for the ATP Finals reaches its closing stages.
