Rybakina seals year-end world No. 1 in Tokyo

Elena Rybakina has secured the year-end world No. 1 ranking for the first time after beating fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-2 6-3 in the second round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday. The 27-year-old needed just one more victory this season to make certain that world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka could not overtake her, and she delivered it in 70 minutes without dropping serve, saving the only break point she faced with a heavy backhand in the final game before closing out the win with her sixth ace.

A season built on two Grand Slam titles

Rybakina rose to world No. 1 for the first time on her way to winning the US Open last month, adding to the Australian Open title she won in January to take her Grand Slam tally to three, after her Wimbledon triumph four years ago. She arrived at the Ariake Coliseum fresh from capturing her fourth title of the season at last week's Ningbo Open, where she beat Leylah Fernandez in the final — and the Canadian is her next opponent in Tokyo after beating Elise Mertens 6-2 7-6(8).

What comes next for the new year-end No. 1

Rybakina described the achievement as something she and her team had worked hard for, noting how close the leading players are to one another and how pleased she was to have sealed the ranking with wins in Ningbo and Tokyo. She is now chasing a 16th career title in Tokyo before heading to Indian Wells in California for the season-ending WTA Finals, where the season's top eight players compete from 8 to 15 November. Whatever happens there, she will finish the year on top of the rankings — the crowning moment of a season in which she has turned promise into dominance.
