Technology stocks bounced back on Friday from their worst drubbing in more than a year, but the recovery was not enough to save the week, and the Nasdaq Composite finished with a fourth consecutive weekly decline.

The Nasdaq gained 264 points, or 1.09 per cent, to close at 24,579.42, while the S&P 500 climbed 23 points, or 0.31 per cent, to 7,376.86. The Dow Jones Industrial Average moved the other way, falling 237 points, or 0.46 per cent, to 51,285.73.

Even so, all three major indexes ended the week lower. The Nasdaq lost 3.4 per cent over the week, the S&P 500 dropped 2.7 per cent — its worst week since early April 2025 — and the Dow slipped 0.9 per cent.

The damage was done on Thursday, when a rout in artificial intelligence stocks turned Wall Street's post-election relief into its worst session since April 2025. The Nasdaq sank 5.5 per cent, or 1,422 points, in a single day, while the S&P 500 fell 4.4 per cent and the Dow lost 1,833 points. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 6.4 per cent, its worst day since the market crash of March 2020, wiping out about $2.5 trillion in market value.

The sell-off followed the Democrats' sweep of Congress in Tuesday's midterms, which raised fears of tighter AI regulation and a data-centre slowdown.

Friday brought some relief for the hardest-hit names. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rallied 4.2 per cent, with Nvidia up 2.8 per cent and Advanced Micro Devices gaining 11 per cent. The Nasdaq nevertheless remains in correction territory, more than 10 per cent below the record it set last month. Attention now turns to Tuesday's October inflation report and Nvidia's earnings on 17 November.
