Pakistan and the United Kingdom have agreed to deepen cooperation in security, law enforcement, migration, trade and investment, Pakistan's Foreign Office said on Thursday, 5 November.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar received the visiting UK Minister of State for Security, Dan Jarvis, in Islamabad, where the two sides reviewed bilateral relations and agreed to "further deepen cooperation" across those areas.

Regional conflicts on the agenda

Dar and Jarvis also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including diplomatic efforts on Iran and Gaza and maritime security, and discussed continued cooperation through an eight-nation diplomatic framework, the Foreign Office said.

The framework, known as R4+E4, brings together Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Egypt alongside France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. Foreign ministers from the eight countries met in Istanbul last month to discuss regional conflicts and shared security and economic challenges.

Counterterrorism talks came first

The meeting followed the annual Pakistan-UK counterterrorism dialogue in Islamabad on Wednesday, where both sides discussed the regional security environment and threats from transnational terrorist networks. A day earlier, the two sides had expressed concern at terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, the Foreign Office said.

Islamabad and London have also been engaged in the Enhanced Strategic Dialogue since 2011, covering trade, economic growth, culture, security and education. No specific new agreement or timetable was announced from Thursday's meeting.

Every substantive claim in this report is attributed to the Foreign Office. No independent corroboration from a major Pakistani outlet was found, and no UK government release on the meeting was available when this article was written.
