Peshawar school collapse: owners charged, province orders school inspections

Police in Peshawar have registered a case against the owners, shareholders and construction contractor of a private school in Dir Colony after a roof collapse on 15 October 2026 killed children and a teacher, according to the first information report.
The collapse happened during morning classes at about 8:48am local time, when a roof on an upper floor fell onto classrooms below. Rescue workers spent hours pulling children from the rubble, and families gathered outside seeking news.
Casualty figures varied as counts were updated in the days after the collapse: UNICEF's statement on 15 October reported at least 28 children and one teacher killed and more than 50 children injured; later police and hospital reports put the toll at 34 children and one teacher killed. This article reports that range rather than a single settled figure, because sources differ by date.
The FIR alleges substandard construction materials were used, that the building was in a dilapidated condition, and that earlier complaints about deteriorating walls and roofs were not addressed. The school's owner was arrested on the day of the collapse, police said.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's government has ordered inspections of private school buildings across the province, with district committees to report findings and recommendations within three days, and UNICEF has called for building safety standards and regular inspections to be strictly enforced.
