Philips Century Powers New Zealand Past India in T20I

Glenn Phillips batting for New Zealand against India at Eden Park, Auckland

Glenn Phillips produced one of the great Twenty20 innings of New Zealand's home summer, smashing 107 from 49 balls as the Black Caps beat India by 87 runs in the fourth T20I at Eden Park in Auckland on 30 October 2026. The victory ended a three-match losing run in the series and gave the hosts their first win over India at their home ground since 2019.

New Zealand posted 259 for 7, their highest total in Twenty20 internationals and the highest total ever recorded against India in the format. India were bowled out for 172 for 9 in reply, making it India's second-heaviest defeat by runs in T20Is.

Phillips and Bracewell turn the match

India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to field, and New Zealand made a flying start through Finn Allen and Daryl Mitchell, reaching 67 in the powerplay. Tim Seifert and Bevon Jacobs fell cheaply, and at 112 for 4 after 10.4 overs India sensed an opening. Phillips and Michael Bracewell closed it in brutal fashion, adding 115 from just 40 balls for the fifth wicket.

Phillips struck six fours and 10 sixes at a strike rate of 218.37 on his way to a second Twenty20 international century, reaching 50 from 31 deliveries and needing only 15 more balls to complete the hundred. His attack included four consecutive sixes in a Nitish Kumar Reddy over that cost 32 runs. Bracewell smashed 65 from 25 balls, and New Zealand hit 20 sixes and 14 fours in total, adding 85 runs from the last five overs. Mayank Yadav was the pick of the India bowlers with three wickets for 48 runs.

India chase never recovers

India's chase never recovered from a nightmare start. Sanju Samson fell for four in the first over and Ishan Kishan also departed cheaply as Jacob Duffy set the tone with the new ball. Tilak Varma top scored with 35, but no other batter built the partnership the chase demanded, and India closed on 172 for 9.

Duffy finished with four wickets for 23 runs, the best figures by a New Zealand bowler against India in Twenty20 internationals, while Mitchell Santner claimed two for 24 and Matt Fisher two for 40.

A series-defining knock

Phillips was named player of the match for the 10th time in Twenty20 internationals, a joint record for a New Zealand player, and his 276 runs in four matches in the series came at an average of 92. "I don't think you've ever got enough to feel comfortable with this side," Phillips said after his 107 off 49. "You need a ton of runs to even have a sniff of beating India."

The win cut India's series lead to 3-1 ahead of the fifth and final match in Hamilton on 1 November, and Phillips went on to finish the series with 341 runs, passing Phil Salt's record of 331 for the most runs in a bilateral Twenty20 international series. India still claimed the series 3-2, but the Eden Park hundred was the innings that stopped the hosts from being swept.
