Polish authorities have arrested four people on charges of spying for Russian intelligence services and supplying them with military components, the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) said on Thursday, 5 November.

Two other people accused of taking part in an organised criminal group have been placed under non-custodial preventive measures. The four charged with espionage have been placed in pre-trial detention for three months.

Who was arrested

The six suspects are five Polish citizens, aged 25 to 52, and a 37-year-old Russian woman, according to the agency and Poland's special-services coordinator, Tomasz Siemoniak. The four espionage charges include the Russian woman.

The ABW said the group acted on behalf of the Russian special services and took part in activities supporting the military potential of the Russian Federation. It said the group illegally supplied Russia with significant quantities of military components used, among other things, for the production of ammunition and weapon systems.

Part of a wider pattern

The arrests add to a series of espionage and sabotage cases in Poland. Siemoniak said about 100 people have been suspected of involvement in such incidents, or charged in ABW espionage and sabotage investigations, since 1 January 2024.

The charges are allegations at this stage. No trial outcome has been reported, and the agency has not published further detail on the components said to have been supplied or on how the alleged network operated.
