Premier League Matchday 8: City stay top as Liverpool climb to fourth

Manchester City remain top of the Premier League after Matchday 8, despite dropping their first points of the season in a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa on Saturday. Arsenal sit second on goal difference, with Brighton third and Liverpool fourth, one point behind the Seagulls, after a full weekend of results played through Storm Boelo.
Friday and Saturday
The round opened on Friday with Ipswich Town 1-1 Nottingham Forest at Portman Road. On Saturday, Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park, Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 at the Emirates, Coventry City lost 0-1 to Fulham, and Chelsea lost 0-2 to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. City's defeat ended their perfect start, but their 21 points still keep them at the summit at the close of play on Sunday.
Sunday: Liverpool, Newcastle and United
On Sunday, Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0 at Anfield, with a Pascal Gross own goal from a Florian Wirtz shot and a second from Alexander Isak, to move to 15 points and fourth place. Newcastle United won 2-0 at Crystal Palace, Hull City drew 1-1 with Brentford, Sunderland drew 0-0 with Leeds United at the Stadium of Light, and Manchester United slumped to a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth. United, without a league win since beating Ipswich 5-2 on 30 August, sit 16th on seven points, one above the relegation zone, with pressure mounting on manager Michael Carrick.
