Rahmat Shah 173 puts Afghanistan ahead in Sharjah Test

Rahmat Shah struck a superb 173 as Afghanistan passed 500 and took a slender first-innings lead over Zimbabwe on day four of the first Test in Sharjah.
Afghanistan resumed on 402 for 7, still 102 runs behind Zimbabwe's imposing 504, but Shah's innings carried the hosts to 514 all out. Rahmanullah Gurbaz made 113 and Sediqullah Atal 105 in a strong batting display, while Newman Nyamhuri took five wickets for 82 and Graeme Cremer claimed three for 177.
Zimbabwe then turned the match back in their favour in the second innings. Brendan Taylor scored a breezy 82 and captain Brian Bennett finished unbeaten on 49 as the visitors reached 164 for 3 at stumps, an overall lead of 154 runs with seven wickets still in hand.
The fourth day followed a familiar pattern in Sharjah, with Afghanistan dominating the early sessions before Zimbabwe fought back in the afternoon and evening. Shah and his partner added 92 runs for the eighth wicket, the highest such stand for Afghanistan, in almost three hours at the crease.
With one day left, Zimbabwe will look to bat on and set a target, but the flat and unresponsive pitch makes a result far from certain. Unless something dramatic happens on the final day, the match looks set to drift towards a draw, with the two-Test series still to be decided. ESPNcricinfo's match report has the full scorecard.
