Sensex, Nifty Post Best Week in Over a Year on FII Buying

Indian shares went the other way while the rest of the world sold off, closing their strongest week in more than a year as foreign investors poured money back into the market.

The Nifty 50 climbed 8.58 per cent over the week, gaining 2 per cent on the final trading day alone to close at 25,030, reclaiming the psychologically important 25,000 mark after a seven-session winning streak. The BSE Sensex rose 8.82 per cent for the week, ending 1,718 points higher at 81,028 on Friday. Both benchmarks closed at their highest levels in more than eight months.

The rally was powered by a sharp reversal in foreign flows. Foreign institutional investors posted strong net inflows during the week, a dramatic turnaround after a long stretch of selling, as easing geopolitical concerns, strong domestic fundamentals and a steep fall in crude oil prices drew buyers back.

Brent crude fell about 16 per cent during the week to near $99 a barrel, easing inflation worries for the oil-importing economy, while the rupee strengthened about 1.2 per cent against the dollar.

The gains stand in sharp contrast to the rest of Asia, where Japan's Nikkei plunged into bear-market territory and South Korea's Kospi triggered a trading halt in the same week. Investors treated India as a relative safe harbour while technology-heavy markets unravelled on fears about artificial intelligence spending.

Despite the surge, both Indian benchmarks remain in negative territory for 2026, with the Nifty down 4.2 per cent and the Sensex lower by 4.9 per cent. Traders will now watch US inflation data due on Tuesday and India's own consumer price figures, while the exchanges hold their special Diwali Muhurat trading session on Sunday, 8 November, marking the start of the new Samvat 2083 year.
