Shadman Islam ruled out of South Africa tour

Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam ruled out of South Africa tour with ankle injury sustained in Sylhet Test

Bangladesh have suffered a setback ahead of their tour of South Africa, with opener Shadman Islam ruled out after sustaining an ankle injury during the ongoing second Test against West Indies in Sylhet.

Shadman twisted his left ankle while fielding on the second day of the Test on Saturday. He was chasing a ball played towards fine leg by Amir Jangoo in the 78th over of West Indies' first innings when he went down and had to be stretchered off the field before being taken to hospital for an MRI scan.

Team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan confirmed that Shadman was unable to continue fielding and was not in a position to bat in Bangladesh's first innings, leaving the side a batter short in Sylhet.

A member of Bangladesh's selection panel confirmed his unavailability for the South Africa assignment, telling Cricbuzz: "He (Shadman) is ruled out from the South Africa tour. As far as my knowledge is concerned, he suffered a tear while there is a possibility of a fracture as well." The full scan report is still awaited, so no recovery timeline has been confirmed.

Mymensingh opener Mahfizul Islam Robin has emerged as the likely replacement for the tour. Bangladesh are scheduled to leave Dhaka on 10 November for a multi-format tour of South Africa comprising two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is, with the first Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg from 15 November.
