Sidney Crosby Passes Dionne for Sixth in NHL Scoring

Sidney Crosby moved into sole possession of sixth place on the NHL's all-time points list on Saturday night, scoring twice as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-2 at Crypto.com Arena.
Crosby passed Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne with his 1,772nd career point, then added an empty-net goal to finish the night on 1,773 points, built on 660 goals and 1,113 assists. Dionne finished his career with 1,771 points, and Crosby passed him in the city where Dionne starred for 12 seasons with the Kings.
The milestone goal arrived at 17:13 of the second period, when Evgeni Malkin's one-timer from the right circle caught a piece of Crosby before going into the net off a setup from Erik Karlsson, making it 4-2. Crosby was awarded his second goal of the night at 18:44 for the 5-2 final after he was impeded by Los Angeles defenceman Erik Gustafsson on a breakaway towards the empty net.
It was a fitting setting for the achievement. Dionne's jersey hangs from the rafters in Los Angeles, and Crosby admitted the location added something special. "I mean, it was probably a little bit cooler because it was here," he said, noting that Dionne played 12 seasons for the Kings.
The win mattered for more than the record books. Tommy Novak also scored twice, opening the scoring 1:52 into the first period and adding a second at 5:10, while Egor Chinakhov scored and Malkin recorded three assists. Kris Letang added two assists and goaltender Sergei Murashov made 26 saves for his first win of the season.
The victory ended a seven-game road losing streak for Pittsburgh, who had gone 0-6-1 away from home since a 7-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers in their season opener on September 30. It also snapped a four-game winless run for the Penguins, who improved to 6-9-2.
Los Angeles had their moments. Corey Perry and Alex Laferriere scored for the Kings, and Artemi Panarin appeared to tie the game at 3-3 at 15:36 of the second period, only for the goal to be overturned after Pittsburgh challenged for offside and a video review agreed. Darcy Kuemper made 14 saves for the Kings, who fell to 5-8-2.
There was another milestone in the game for Pittsburgh. Malkin, with 1,421 career points, passed Adam Oates for 20th place on the NHL's all-time scoring list. Crosby, Malkin and Letang each recorded multiple points in the same game for the 37th time, and Pittsburgh improved to 36-1-0 in those contests.
At 39, Crosby now sits 25 points behind Ron Francis, who is fifth on the all-time list with 1,798 points. He had scored only one goal in his previous seven games before Saturday, and this was his second multigoal game of the season. The Penguins now head to Anaheim to face the Ducks on Sunday, with their captain chasing the next name on the list.
