Sutton's Extra-Time Winner Sends Oldham Past Wednesday

Will Sutton scored a dramatic extra-time winner as Oldham Athletic beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 in the FA Cup first round at Boundary Park on Sunday, 8 November 2026. The home-grown central defender headed home in the 110th minute to settle a tie that had exploded into life after a quiet opening.
Oldham, who play in League Two, knocked out opponents from the division above them, and the result spoiled Dave Challinor's first match in charge of Sheffield Wednesday. The visitors had fought back to force extra time, but Sutton's late header sent the Latics into Monday's second-round draw.
For much of the afternoon there was little to separate the two sides. The first half passed without a goal, and the tie only truly caught fire after the break. Oldham were the better side for long spells, and they took a deserved lead in the 66th minute when Calum Kavanagh steadied himself and drove home fiercely. The goal came after Mike Fondop headed on Noah Chilvers' cross from the right, and it was Kavanagh's sixth goal of the season.
Wednesday responded quickly. Ten minutes later, former Oldham forward Davis Keillor-Dunn levelled the scores with a precise finish into the bottom corner from a cross by substitute Sean Fusire. It was the Wrexham loanee's fifth goal of the campaign, and he kept his celebrations muted out of respect for his former club.
The match then took a heated turn in the 84th minute. A touchline fracas involving a large number of players from both sides led to Oldham manager Micky Mellon being sent to the stands, while Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Callum Slattery was booked. Mellon was dismissed for putting his head against Slattery during the confrontation, and he watched the remainder of the tie from the stands.
With the score level at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the tie went to extra time. Wednesday enjoyed the better of the opening period of the added half hour and looked the more likely side to find a winner, but they could not make their pressure count. Then, with ten minutes of extra time remaining, Oldham struck. Wednesday failed to deal with a free kick into their penalty area, Emmanuel Monthe headed the ball into the danger zone, goalkeeper Pierce Trueman could not connect cleanly with his attempted punch, and Sutton was left free to nod home from six yards.
Sutton admitted afterwards that he feared his header might fly over the bar when it first left his head from close range, but the ball dropped into the net and sparked celebrations around Boundary Park. Oldham then defended resolutely through the closing minutes to protect their lead and confirm their place in the next round.
For Challinor, the defeat was a difficult start to his time in charge of the Owls, and he will know there is considerable work ahead after his side were beaten by lower-league opposition. For Oldham, it was a night to enjoy: a hard-fought cup win, a home-grown hero, and a place in the second-round draw.
