Sunderland stun Chelsea 1-0 as Le Fee penalty decides it

Sunderland claimed a famous 1-0 win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, as Enzo Le Fee's first-half penalty proved enough to beat the visitors in the Premier League.

The decisive moment arrived in the 36th minute, when Brian Brobbey was pulled back by Levi Colwill as he drove into the Chelsea area. The referee pointed to the spot, and after a VAR check the decision stood. Le Fee stepped up and buried the penalty in the bottom corner to give the promoted side the lead.

Sunderland had been forced into an early change, with Granit Xhaka forced off through injury just three minutes into the match. The hosts coped well without their midfielder, however, and went into the break ahead after the better of the first half.

Chelsea pushed for an equaliser after the restart and had a strong penalty appeal from Cole Palmer waved away. Sunderland still had the better of the clear chances, and Wilson Isidor was denied by goalkeeper Mike Penders when through on goal in the 77th minute, with Le Fee having threaded him through.

The home side held firm in the closing stages to secure a victory that will rank among their best since returning to the top flight. Chelsea, meanwhile, left Wearside frustrated after failing to find a way past a well-organised Sunderland defence. Sky Sports carried live coverage of the match.
