Uber Bookings Jump 20% but Profit Forecast Disappoints

Uber's bookings jumped 20 percent to $59.8 billion in the third quarter, but its profit forecast for the final three months of the year disappointed investors, as driver shortages and the Middle East conflict weighed on its ride-hailing business.

Uber reported on Wednesday 4 November for the quarter ended 30 September. Trips rose 16 percent to 4.1 billion and monthly active platform consumers increased 14 percent to 215 million — the fifth straight quarter of gross bookings growth above 20 percent. Revenue rose 10 percent to $14.8 billion, although business-model changes cut eight percentage points from that growth; Reuters reported it was the slowest revenue growth since early 2021.

A profit miss on paper On a GAAP basis, net income fell to $512 million from $6.63 billion a year earlier, reflecting a $476 million pre-tax loss from revaluing equity investments. That left GAAP earnings at 25 cents a share, against $3.11 a year earlier. Adjusted earnings told a different story: non-GAAP earnings of 88 cents a share beat the 86-cent estimate, and adjusted EBITDA rose 31 percent to about $3.0 billion.

Mobility was the soft spot: revenue fell 2 percent to $7.52 billion even though bookings rose 18 percent to $29.5 billion. Delivery revenue jumped 23 percent to $5.49 billion, with bookings up 22 percent to $28.5 billion, and Freight bookings surged 35 percent to $1.77 billion. Uber said the Middle East conflict cost about 75 basis points of mobility bookings growth.

A cautious final quarter For the fourth quarter, Uber forecast gross bookings of $63.25 billion to $65.25 billion, against analyst estimates of $64.42 billion, and non-GAAP earnings of 95 to 99 cents a share, against estimates of $1.06. Uber also said president and chief corporate affairs officer Jill Hazelbaker will step down on 30 November.
