Zigiotti Olme header ends Villa's seven-game unbeaten run

Manchester United Women ended Aston Villa's seven-game unbeaten run with a 1-0 win in the Women's Super League at Villa Park on Sunday.

Substitute Julia Zigiotti Olme settled a tight encounter midway through the second half, stealing in at the back post to power a header beyond goalkeeper Akane Okuma from Hanna Lundkvist's cross. It was the Sweden midfielder's fourth goal of the season and came with barely 20 minutes left to play.

Villa, who had not lost since a 4-0 defeat at Tottenham in September, had the better of the early exchanges in both halves. Amalie Vangsgaard threatened inside three minutes, while Chasity Grant spurned a golden chance after the break, skewing a shot over the bar. United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce twice denied the hosts, parrying a Lucia Kendall drive and tipping an Oriane Jean-Francois shot over the top corner.

The match began with tributes to mark Remembrance Sunday, as players, staff and supporters of both clubs observed a period of silence after a military parade, a reading of 'For the Fallen' and the Last Post. Each team wore the poppy symbol, with Villa in black poppy armbands.

The win was United's fourth in their last six league games and lifted them to fourth in the table. Villa look to bounce back next weekend when they host Birmingham City in the Second City derby. Full details are in the Aston Villa match report.
