Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust will recruit 50 new ward clerks over the coming months, offering a route into NHS careers for people starting out or changing career. The trust says the ward clerks will play an integral role in the day-to-day running of its wards, while relieving pressure on nurses.

The work is varied: admitting patients, preparing notes, booking appointments and speaking with patients’ families. The trust says no two days are the same and describes the role as a brilliant way to learn how hospitals operate, while freeing clinical staff to concentrate on clinical duties, improving nurse wellbeing, patient discharges and flow through the hospitals.

Apprenticeship route into a band three role

Successful candidates will be employed as apprentices on a 17-month fixed-term contract. On completion, they will move into a band three ward clerk role. Chief Nurse Kathryn Halford said the trust, as a major employer in its communities, was delighted to offer the opportunity to residents across Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge, and that it wanted to employ from within its own boroughs.
